Nineteen

Darla traversed five miles east of the bar and stopped by the banks of the Lugosi River. Jarko landed beside her, and they both stared out at the running water, the stillness a lovely paradox to the madness they’d just left.

“So, Duchess,” Jarko said, “I would have to say that when you put your mind to it, you can create some absolutely beautiful chaos.”

“Is that what you’d call pantsing it?” Darla asked.

“I’d say so. I mean, we could have always made an even bigger mess. Hit a gas main. I’ve hunted a few devil worshipping cannibals at their secret churches and I have to say, causing a little mayhem with hundreds of lit candles around gives the hunt this, I don’t know, je ne sais quoi.”

Darla’s eyebrows perked up. “French,” she said. “I wouldn’t have guessed that.”

Jarko smiled. “C’est une belle nuit pour le chaos.”

“I heard a chaos in there,” she said. “What did you say?”

“I said it’s a beautiful night for chaos.”

“Where did you learn that?” Darla asked.

Jarko shrugged, but she saw a glimmer of something in his yellow eyes, something he was holding back.

“Nowhere special,” he said, clearly lying. “Just picked it up along the way.”

“Along the way.”

He nodded.

“If you want to tell me…”

“It’s really not that interesting,” he said.

“Maybe you could let me be the judge of that.”

“Maybe,” he said, but didn’t offer more. Darla realized this was as far as this particular line of conversation was going to go at the moment. But the more she learned about Jarko Murkvale, the more questions she had.

She smiled. “Come here.”

Jarko followed Darla over to a downed tree. She used her scourge and gently carved out two large pieces of wood, then hollowed them out with a delicate spin from her weapon until they looked like two wooden cups. Then she went over to the banks of the river, knelt down, and filled each makeshift cup with river water. She gently pressed her fingertip to the point of her bone crown, allowing a single drop of blood to fall into each cup. It turned the liquid an amber color. She handed a cup to Jarko. He took it.

“It’s warm,” he said. “Is that from you?”

She nodded. “Don’t worry. I don’t have cooties.”

“What are cooties? A type of monster?”

“Never mind,” she said. “Fresh river water with a layer of silt at the bottom. And a drop of plasma to give it a little kick. Let me know what you think.”

Jarko brought the cup to his lips.

“Oh, and be careful of splinters.”

He smiled and took a sip. He pursed his lips and smacked them together.

“Not bad, Duchess,” he said. “Not bad at all. I mean, it’s no tequila from a broken bottle inside a Nazi bar.”

“Well, nothing can compare to that.”

Jarko took another sip. Darla smiled, watching him drink. Another sip and he held the cup back out to her.

“Can I get a refill?” he asked.

“Why of course,” she said. Darla filled his cup again and handed it back. He downed the contents greedily.
